Dilip Vengsarkar: ‘Wrong to eliminate toss in U-23 matches’

Former India captain Dilip Vengsarkar has launched a sharp critique of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), labeling the decision to scrap the toss in the Col CK Nayudu Trophy as “absolutely wrong.” Speaking to The Times of India, Vengsarkar urged the board to restore the practice for the upcoming season, arguing that the coin flip injects a unique “charm and excitement” into the sport that administrative changes cannot replicate. His comments come as a direct challenge to the current format, which has been in effect for two seasons, and signal a growing dissent among cricketing veterans regarding the removal of traditional rituals from domestic cricket.

Key Match Highlights & Tactical Analysis

The BCCI initially implemented this rule change in May 2024, with then-secretary Jay Shah announcing that the visiting team would be granted the choice of batting or bowling first in the men’s under-23 tournament. The primary objective was to curb the widespread practice of home teams preparing spin-friendly pitches to secure an unfair advantage, a move that marked the first time the toss was eliminated in Indian domestic cricket. This decision mirrored a similar experiment by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) in the County Championship between 2016 and 2019, a policy that was ultimately reversed in 2020 after facing significant backlash from players and fans who felt it undermined competitive integrity.

Vengsarkar emphasized that the core of cricket lies in adaptability, stating that wickets and conditions are identical for both sides. He argued that teams must build balanced squads capable of coping with any surface, rather than relying on pitch manipulation. “If you play a balanced team, you can cope with any conditions,” Vengsarkar noted, highlighting the irony of making a wicket to suit a specific strength only to lose the strategic element of the toss. His stance suggests that the BCCI may need to reconsider its approach, as the removal of the toss has failed to solve the underlying issues of pitch preparation while stripping the game of a key strategic and traditional component.
