Sam Houston girls basketball enters the 2026-27 campaign with a singular mission: breaking a playoff drought that has persisted despite two consecutive district titles. As two-time reigning 27-5A champions, the Hurricanes shared the district crown with Burbank last season, finishing with a blistering 15-1 record. However, the team has yet to secure a playoff victory in recent years, a gap in their resume that head coach Chancy Campbell and his roster are determined to close. The stakes are high, as the program seeks to translate its regular-season dominance into deep tournament runs.
Returning core aims to finally convert dominant regular seasons into postseason wins
The foundation for this push rests on an unprecedented level of continuity, with four returning starters and two additional letterwinners returning to the lineup. Junior forward Laniya Lee, senior guard Jakiah Caldwell, junior guard Faira Starks, and sophomore forward Sasha Harris form the nucleus of the squad, having started varsity games since their freshman years. This extensive experience under Campbell’s demanding system has fostered a tight-knit unit where daily practice chemistry translates directly to game-day execution. “We get to build on our chemistry every day during practice, and it shows during the games,” Lee noted, highlighting the stability that allows the team to operate at a high level without the typical growing pains of a new roster.
Coach Campbell’s high expectations have accelerated the development of this young core, who are now poised to leverage their accumulated varsity minutes for postseason success. Starks emphasized the culture of accountability, noting that starting as freshmen set a high bar that the team continues to exceed as they mature. With the “Big Three” of Lee, Caldwell, and Starks anchoring the offense alongside Harris, Sam Houston possesses the talent and tactical discipline to challenge for a third straight district title. The focus now shifts from regular-season consistency to the pressure of elimination games, where the Hurricanes aim to finally cross the finish line in the playoffs.
