Cathedral enters the upcoming high school boys’ basketball season as the consensus favorite to claim the City championship, securing the top spot in the preseason poll conducted by City coaches. The defending champions received 53 points in the voting, establishing a clear lead over their primary rivals. This selection underscores the team’s momentum following a dominant previous campaign where they not only captured the City Tournament title but also advanced to win the Class 3A state championship.
Defending champions top preseason poll, with Scecina and Crispus Attucks close behind.
The competition remains fierce, with Scecina and Crispus Attucks forming a tight second tier in the rankings. Scecina garnered 44 points to finish second, while Crispus Attucks followed closely with 40 points, signaling a highly competitive landscape for the remaining spots in the bracket. Bishop Chatard rounded out the top five with 25 points, and Tindley received six points, indicating a depth of talent across the City conference that will likely result in intense matchups throughout the regular season.
Cathedral’s status as the frontrunner is reinforced by their recent history, specifically their 65-58 victory over Scecina in last year’s City title game. That win served as the springboard for their state title run, proving their ability to perform under pressure against elite competition. As the new season approaches, attention will turn to how these top-ranked teams maintain their form, with the preseason poll setting the stage for a battle between the established powerhouse and the hungry challengers looking to dethrone the reigning champions.
