Lewisville Hebron claimed its first-ever UIL Class 6A girls water polo state championship on Saturday, defeating defending champion Brazoswood 10-8 at the Josh Davis Natatorium in San Antonio. The victory capped a perfect 28-0 season for the Hawks, who dominated the Buccaneers throughout the year, having also won their two regular-season matchups 8-6 and 9-5. For Brazoswood, the loss marked the end of a 32-3 campaign and their fifth consecutive state tournament appearance, ending their bid for a second consecutive title.
Amber Cho’s 13 saves seal Hebron’s first title as Brazoswood falls in a tight 10-8 thriller
The final was a tense, back-and-forth affair that featured six ties and saw neither team establish a lead greater than two goals at any point. Brazoswood, coached by Robert Brown, mounted a late surge when senior attacker Larissa Bracken, who finished with three goals, pulled the Buccaneers within 9-8 with 4:15 remaining. However, Hebron sophomore attacker Lauren Waggoner answered with a crucial goal with 2:41 left on the clock, effectively sealing the game and preventing a dramatic comeback.
Hebron senior goalkeeper Amber Cho was named the game’s most valuable player after recording 13 saves, including a crucial stretch where she kept Brazoswood scoreless for the final four minutes. Her performance was the deciding factor in a match that saw Therese Braun add two goals for Brazoswood. The result cements Hebron’s status as the dominant force in 6A water polo, while Brazoswood looks to regroup after falling short in their pursuit of back-to-back state honors.
