The Seattle Kraken and Calgary Flames collide at the Scotiabank Saddledome on Thursday night, marking the opening night clash for both franchises in the 2026-27 NHL season. Seattle enters the campaign with a clear mandate to end a three-year playoff drought, having finished last season with a 34-37-11 record. The Kraken have fortified their roster by adding Mackie Samoskevich and locking in Bobby McMann to a six-year extension after his impressive stint with Toronto. With the team ranking 28th in the NHL in scoring last year, the offensive burden falls heavily on Matty Beniers, Shane Wright, and Berkly Catton to elevate Seattle’s attack against a formidable defensive structure.
Kraken seek playoff return as Beniers and Wright target Flames’ new-look attack
Calgary opens its home schedule with a roster centered on veteran leadership and emerging talent. Matt Coronato, who led the Flames with 45 points last season, anchors the top line alongside Morgan Frost and Matvei Gridin. The Flames will be without Jonathan Huberdeau, who has been placed on injured reserve as the club finalizes his status, creating a potential void in their secondary scoring. Goaltender Dustin Wolf is expected to start, facing a Kraken lineup that has significantly improved its depth and consistency during the offseason.
Fans can follow the action live via major sports streaming platforms, with the game serving as a critical early indicator of each team’s trajectory. For Seattle, the ability to convert their offseason investments into immediate offensive production will be the deciding factor against Calgary’s structured defense. Meanwhile, the Flames must prove their new top-line chemistry can withstand the pressure of opening night. This matchup sets the tone for the Pacific Division, pitting Seattle’s hunger for a playoff spot against Calgary’s quest for stability and home-ice dominance.
