The third-ranked Utah Utes secured a pivotal 28-20 victory over No. 8 BYU in the Holy War, extending their undefeated streak to 9-0 for the first time in nearly two decades. The win at Rice–Eccles Stadium, which featured an unusual 10 a.m. local kickoff, immediately triggered a field storm as fans rushed the pitch the moment the clock expired. By not waiting for the Cougars to clear the field, the Utes risked an NCAA fine, but the celebration underscored the intensity of the in-state rivalry and the team’s momentum heading into the College Football Playoff conversation.
Devon Dampier’s dual-threat explosion powers 9-0 Utes past No. 8 Cougars in Big 12 title race
Devon Dampier delivered a historic performance, dominating both the air and the ground to dismantle the BYU defense. The Utes quarterback completed 14 of 26 passes for 177 yards and two touchdowns while also rushing for 87 yards and two scores on a game-high 20 carries. In stark contrast, BYU quarterback Bear Bachmeier struggled significantly, throwing four interceptions that allowed Utah to control the tempo and protect the football. Dampier’s versatility was the deciding factor in a tight contest that showcased Utah’s depth and resilience.
Head coach Morgan Scalley emphasized that the victory is a stepping stone rather than a destination, noting that the team’s culture is thriving as they push for the Big 12 title. Scalley told ESPN that while the win was special, the season is far from over, urging the squad to maintain focus on the upcoming schedule. With the Big 12 race heating up and the CFP picture clarifying, Utah’s 9-0 record sends a clear message to the SEC and Big Ten: the Utes are a legitimate contender that must be dealt with now.
