Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has disclosed that Lewis Hamilton’s decision to join Ferrari immediately secured Kimi Antonelli’s place in the 2025 Formula 1 grid. Speaking after Antonelli clinched the World Championship at the Mexico City Grand Prix, Wolff described the morning Hamilton visited his home to confirm his departure. “The moment he confirmed that he was going to Ferrari, it was instinctively I knew that Kimi is going to go in the car,” Wolff stated, highlighting how the shock defection of the seven-time World Champion triggered an immediate, pre-planned succession protocol within the Brackley war room.

While outside pundits viewed promoting a teenager directly into a factory Silver Arrow as a massive gamble, Wolff characterized the move as a calculated risk with a manageable downside. The Austrian executive argued that the worst-case scenario for Antonelli would not fundamentally destroy the team’s competitive trajectory, allowing Mercedes to pivot quickly without prolonged uncertainty. This strategic agility was crucial, as the team needed to stabilize its driver lineup instantly following the announcement that sent shockwaves through the paddock.
Wolff further revealed that the decision was not made in isolation but was part of a broader long-term plan involving senior leadership. He noted that even before Antonelli had fully established himself in Formula 2, the team’s billionaire co-owner was already locking in the succession strategy. This proactive approach ensured that when Hamilton’s exit became official, Mercedes could seamlessly transition to a new era, leveraging Antonelli’s historic championship performance to validate the bold personnel choice.
