Florida State University’s recruiting class took a significant hit on Tuesday as three-star tight end Troy Silberzahn officially decommitted from the Seminoles. The 6-foot-3.5, 212-pound recruit, who had pledged to the program back in July, cited the sudden departure of head coach Mike Norvell as the primary catalyst for his decision. Silberzahn’s exit occurred just 48 hours after FSU dismissed Norvell, defensive coordinator Tony White, and safeties coach Evan Cooper, creating an immediate vacuum of leadership that left young prospects uneasy about the program’s future direction.
Uncertainty over coaching staff stability drives three-star TE to explore new options.
Silberzahn was transparent regarding the instability that influenced his choice, stating that the unknown trajectory of the coaching staff was the “main factor” in his decommitment. “I don’t really know where the staff is going to go,” the three-star athlete explained, adding that he wants to remain open-minded as he navigates the early stages of his recruiting process. He also confirmed that a planned campus visit to Tallahassee this month will likely be canceled, signaling a complete pause in his relationship with the Seminoles while he evaluates other opportunities.
This development marks the second recent decommitment for Florida State, following 2027 three-star wide receiver Majay Thompson, who withdrew his commitment on Sunday prior to Norvell’s firing. Silberzahn has identified the UCF Knights, Virginia Cavaliers, and UCLA Bruins as potential destinations, indicating a shift toward programs with perceived stability or strong recruiting pipelines. With 2028 three-star edge Meshi Dobson also hinting at potential changes, the Seminoles face an urgent challenge to stabilize their brand and secure remaining commitments before further attrition damages their future roster depth.
