The New York Islanders have secured a significant boost to their roster as three key players cleared to travel with the team on their upcoming California road trip. The club, which has been plagued by a wave of injuries since the start of the 2025-26 season, announced on Sunday that forwards Mathew Barzal and Matias Maccelli, along with defenceman Ryan Pulock, will join the squad. This development offers a glimmer of hope for a team that has struggled to maintain depth following a string of setbacks that began before the first puck drop.
Barzal, Maccelli, and Pulock return to active status as Islanders battle roster crisis
The injury crisis intensified after defenceman Alexander Romanov suffered an ACL tear on October 6, but the roster took further hits in late October. Maccelli and forward Calum Ritchie were sidelined on October 17 due to lower-body issues, while Pulock missed time with an upper-body injury sustained on October 29. Although initial projections suggested Maccelli and Pulock would be out for two to four weeks, their inclusion in the travel roster signals a faster-than-expected recovery. Barzal, who missed the first full month of the season after re-aggravating a prior lower-body injury, is also a crucial addition to the forward group.
With the return of these three players, the Islanders can stabilize their lineup heading into a demanding stretch of the schedule. The team’s ability to manage its injury report has been a major point of concern, with four players previously listed on the injured reserve alongside Romanov. By bringing Barzal, Maccelli, and Pulock back into the fold, New York regains essential offensive firepower and defensive structure, potentially altering their trajectory in the standings as they face off against Western Conference opponents in California.
