Schuylerville claimed its first Section 2 Class B boys’ soccer championship since 2019, overcoming a depleted roster to defeat No. 4 Broadalbin-Perth 1-0 in overtime at Bethlehem High School. The Black Horses, who entered the season with significant uncertainty after losing key seniors, proved their depth and resilience against the No. 2 seed. The decisive moment arrived with 9:45 remaining in the first overtime period, when junior midfielder Colden Harrison rose above the defense to head home a corner kick, securing the lone goal of the match.
Colden Harrison’s late header caps a resilient comeback for the Black Horses
The victory serves as a testament to the program’s successful transition phase under head coach David Gauci. Gauci acknowledged the challenge of integrating young players into a competitive lineup, noting that the team had to “figure out” their dynamic compared to the previous year. “We had a lot of young kids coming into the program and they stepped up and made huge strides,” Gauci said. The result validates the coaching staff’s strategy to prioritize development and team cohesion over immediate individual stardom, allowing the junior core to emerge as a unified force.
Key contributors included junior forward Thomas Tyler, whose precise delivery set up Harrison’s winning header, and senior goalkeeper Ethan, who anchored the defense throughout the extra time. Harrison expressed deep gratitude for his teammates, calling the achievement “really special” and emphasizing his pride in the group’s collective effort. This title not only ends a four-year drought for Schuylerville but also establishes a new foundation for the program, signaling that the Black Horses are ready to contend at the highest level of Section 2 soccer.
