Sam Houston head coach Rashard Colquitt correctly identified the Highlands matchup as a potential “trap game,” especially after an emotional victory over Harlandale. With the Owls enjoying a week of rest and two weeks to prepare, while the Hurricanes had no bye until next week, the physical toll was evident. Despite being “beat up” and with their passing game off rhythm, the Hurricanes relied on junior Jaidon Hamilton and a dominant defensive performance to secure a 33-14 win at Alamo Stadium, extending their winning streak to six games.
Key Match Highlights & Tactical Analysis
The Hurricanes’ offensive strategy shifted decisively toward the ground game, led by Hamilton’s resilience. The drive began with a long punt return by senior Treston Zacharie, compounded by a face mask penalty, setting the stage for a quick strike. Junior Xavier Youngblood capitalized on the favorable field position, taking a direct snap to put Sam Houston on the board early. This efficient start allowed the Hurricanes to control the tempo, minimizing the risk of turnovers and keeping the Highlands offense off balance throughout the contest.
Colquitt emphasized that the victory was about finishing strong to enter the much-needed open week with momentum. “We’re tired. We’re beat up a little bit,” Colquitt admitted, praising his players for performing at a high level despite the fatigue. The win not only secured the regular season finale but also validated the preparation of both coaches and players, ensuring Sam Houston heads into its bye week with confidence and a solid foundation for the upcoming postseason.
