Ryan Preece delivered a spirited performance at Talladega Superspeedway, leading 23 laps in the YellaWood 500 before crossing the finish line in 13th place. Starting 19th, the No. 60 Ford driver executed an aggressive drafting strategy alongside teammates Chris Buescher and Brad Keselowski, separating the RFK Racing trio from the field during the opening stage. Although Preece finished second in that stage behind Buescher, his race took a turn when he was involved in a 12-car accident on Lap 132. Despite the damage, his crew kept the car competitive, allowing Preece to finish on the lead lap and secure valuable points.
Despite a bold Talladega strategy, the RFK Racing driver falls out of the title hunt.
The result provided a modest boost to Preece’s standing, moving him up one position to 15th in the NASCAR Cup Series Chase standings with 2,192 points. He earned 33 points through a combination of his finishing position and stage performance. However, the mathematical reality of the championship race has shifted decisively against him. Preece now trails championship leader Kyle Larson by 249 points, a gap that is too large to overcome with the remaining schedule.
Consequently, Preece is officially eliminated from contention for the 2026 NASCAR Cup Series title. While his aggressive driving at Talladega showcased his competitive edge, the points deficit renders a championship bid impossible. The focus for the RFK Racing driver now shifts to maximizing points in the remaining races to secure a strong finish in the final standings, rather than chasing the elusive title.
