Randy Bennett’s tenure as Arizona State head coach begins with a stark reality check from the Big 12 media. In the Monster Energy Big 12 Men’s Basketball Media Preseason Poll for the 2026-27 season, media members placed the Sun Devils at No. 12 out of 16 teams. This low projection underscores the immediate pressure Bennett faces to reverse a three-year slide that has kept ASU out of the NCAA Tournament. The program has failed to advance past the first round in any of the previous 12 seasons, creating a significant hurdle for the new coach to overcome in his debut year.
Key Match Highlights & Tactical Analysis
Bennett arrives with a proven track record at the major conference level, having guided the Saint Mary’s Gaels to five consecutive NCAA Tournament berths. During that span, his teams advanced past the first round on three occasions. However, the gap between his previous success and the current state of ASU is evident in the conference landscape. The Sun Devils enter the season without the recent postseason momentum that defined Bennett’s time in Moraga, forcing him to rebuild a program that has struggled to find consistency in recent years.
The contrast is sharpest against the Arizona Wildcats, who top the Big 12 media poll at No. 1. UA enters the season as the reigning regular-season and tournament champions, bolstered by the No. 11 overall recruiting class. The Wildcats have established themselves as a perennial powerhouse, reaching the Sweet Sixteen or better in each of the last three seasons. With Arizona cementing its status as the conference leader, Bennett must quickly elevate ASU’s performance to avoid being overshadowed by a rival that continues to dominate the Big 12 hierarchy.
