Sergio Perez has secured his long-term future in Formula One by signing a multi-year contract extension with Cadillac, keeping him with the American team until 2029. The 36-year-old driver committed to the project just weeks before his home Grand Prix in Mexico City, where he is poised to make his 300th career start. This move solidifies the partnership between Perez and Cadillac as they navigate the early stages of their debut season on the grid, with the Mexican star aiming to stabilize his role alongside teammate Valtteri Bottas.
Mexican veteran locks in future with new F1 entrant despite challenging start
Perez brings significant pedigree to the Cadillac lineup, having made his F1 debut in 2011 and accumulated six Grand Prix victories. His most recent titles came during his tenure at Red Bull, where he finished third in the 2022 drivers’ championship and second in 2023 behind Max Verstappen. Although Red Bull released him at the end of the 2024 season, citing a lack of progress in supporting their champion, Perez’s experience remains a critical asset for Cadillac as they strive to establish themselves as a competitive force in the sport.
Despite his historical success, Perez’s current form presents a challenge for the new team. He currently sits at the bottom of the 2026 standings, with his best results being three 14th-place finishes in Barcelona, Silverstone, and Azerbaijan. Neither Perez nor Bottas has yet earned a point for Cadillac, highlighting the steep learning curve for the new entrant. The extension signals Cadillac’s confidence in Perez’s ability to adapt and deliver results as the team develops its car throughout the season.
