The Peoria Rivermen executed their first roster move of the 2026-27 SPHL season on Friday, acquiring defenseman Carter Poulin from defending champion Evansville in exchange for future considerations. The transaction was finalized just hours before the Rivermen hosted Pee Dee for a rematch at Carver Arena, signaling an immediate need to strengthen their defensive structure. By securing a player with recent championship experience, Peoria aims to inject stability and depth into a unit that requires reinforcement as the new season progresses.
Rivermen bolster blueline with 22-year-old defenseman hours before hosting Pee Dee.
Poulin, a 22-year-old, 6-foot-3, 190-pound left-shooting defenseman from Berlin, N.H., brings valuable professional experience to the Rivermen. He played 15 games over parts of two seasons for Evansville, including 10 appearances last year with the SPHL championship team, though he did not participate in their postseason run. His collegiate career at NCAA Division III Rivier University provided a solid foundation, where he recorded 11 goals and 25 assists in 88 games. Serving as team captain in 2025-26 before turning pro last spring, Poulin offers leadership and a reliable two-way game that fits the Rivermen’s current tactical needs.
This trade marks a pivotal moment for Peoria as they look to compete at the highest level of the SPHL. Acquiring a blueliner from the defending champions demonstrates the Rivermen’s commitment to building a roster capable of challenging for another title. With the game against Pee Dee imminent, the addition of Poulin provides an immediate boost to the defensive corps, offering coaches more flexibility in lineup construction. As the season unfolds, this move could prove instrumental in establishing Peoria as a serious contender in the league.
