Toledo’s offensive line and backfield duo dismantled Sacramento State’s defense on Wednesday night, propelling the Rockets to a 20-17 victory that keeps their Mid-American Conference title aspirations intact. CJ Miller anchored the attack with 135 rushing yards, while Autavius Ison added 101 yards and a decisive touchdown, showcasing a ground game that overwhelmed the Hornets. The performance was the defining factor in a tight contest, as Toledo’s 230 total rushing yards contrasted sharply with Sacramento State’s mere eight yards on the ground.
Rockets’ dominant rushing attack secures crucial MAC win and keeps championship hopes alive
The Rockets overcame a 10-7 halftime deficit by executing a high-pressure second-half surge, scoring 13 unanswered points to take control. Ison broke the game open late in the third quarter with a 19-yard score, followed by two field goals from Reice Griffith that extended the lead to 20-10 deep in the fourth quarter. Although Sacramento State’s Jamar Curtis capped a 12-play, 75-yard drive with a 3-yard run to cut the deficit to 20-17, the effort came too late. The Hornets were stopped on fourth down with 55 seconds remaining, failing to convert a final possession from their own 16-yard line.
The statistical disparity in rushing efficiency highlighted the game’s turning point, as Toledo’s balanced approach neutralized Sacramento State’s passing attack. Despite quarterbacks Jackson Sharman and Brian Salazar Jr. combining for 216 passing yards, the Hornets’ inability to run the ball left them vulnerable in critical moments. Toledo quarterback John Alan Richter managed just 60 passing yards, proving that the Rockets did not need to throw the ball to secure the win. With the result, Toledo improves to 7-2 overall and 4-1 in the MAC, climbing into a tie for second place and maintaining a strong position in the conference standings.
