Pine Crest defeated Merritt Island 28-26, 18-25, 25-18, 25-21 in the Class 3A state semifinals at Polk State College in Winter Haven on Nov. 3. The Panthers avenged their regular-season loss to the Mustangs, securing a spot in the championship match after a tense four-set battle. Merritt Island head coach Angie Patrick acknowledged the quality of her opponents, stating, “Props to Pine Crest. They came out to win and they just played really well.” Patrick noted that her team struggled to contain Pine Crest at the net and failed to consistently get their first ball side out, highlighting the parity among top-tier teams at this level of competition.

Serve receive errors and net dominance seal Panthers’ four-set victory

Statistically, the match was remarkably even, with Merritt Island recording one more kill and two more assists than Pine Crest. The Mustangs also committed two fewer service errors, yet the game was ultimately decided by serve receive efficiency. Merritt Island finished with 10 serve receive errors compared to Pine Crest’s four, resulting in the Panthers scoring five more points via opponent errors. This disparity in defensive stability proved decisive in a contest where both squads displayed elite offensive capabilities.

The first set featured a dramatic turnaround, as Merritt Island rallied from a 17-13 deficit to hold set points at 25-24 and 26-25. However, Pine Crest closed out the set with three consecutive points to take the opening frame. The Mustangs responded strongly in the second set, sprinting to a 9-1 lead and maintaining multiple nine-point advantages to even the match. In the third set, after the Mustangs scored the initial point, Pine Crest answered with a four-point run to shift momentum, ultimately controlling the remainder of the match to advance to the finals.
