The Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association and development partner Gilligan Racing LLC announced Wednesday that they have secured control of more than 300 acres in Marion County for a proposed Thoroughbred racetrack. Attorney John Morgan, founder of the Morgan & Morgan law firm, confirmed the milestone, noting that the specific location was chosen for its ideal size, terrain, and accessibility, though the exact site remains under wraps for now. This move marks a critical step forward for a project that has been in early planning stages, with regulatory approvals and infrastructure arrangements still pending.

Preliminary blueprints for the year-round entertainment destination include both dirt and turf racing courses, grandstands, and extensive hospitality facilities. The complex is designed to feature dining, entertainment, and event venues that will operate throughout the year, transforming the site into a multi-faceted hub rather than a seasonal-only venue. By integrating high-end amenities with traditional racing infrastructure, the developers aim to create a premium destination that appeals to both dedicated racing fans and general tourists.
Morgan emphasized that the development aligns with Marion County’s deep-rooted history in the horse industry, a region already renowned for breeding and training elite Thoroughbreds. “Some of the greatest Thoroughbreds in history have been bred, raised and trained right here,” Morgan stated, highlighting the unique opportunity to bring world-class racing to a community with the perfect foundation. This strategic placement leverages local expertise and infrastructure to potentially establish a new pillar for Florida’s equine economy.
