Southeastern Minnesota high school football fans will learn which teams advance to the state tournament this Friday, Nov. 5, as eight section championship games tip off. The spotlight shines on two critical matchups that promise high stakes and intense competition. In one game, No. 5 seed Century (5-5) challenges No. 2 seed Northfield (7-2) in a contest defined by razor-thin margins. Northfield holds a slight edge in regular-season history, having defeated Century 13-12 on Oct. 14, a game where Century led 12-0 after three quarters before the Panthers rallied. This rivalry carries significant weight for Century, which is chasing its first-ever state tournament appearance, while Northfield looks to end a 14-year drought, having last made the state cut in 2010.
Century seeks historic state berth while Byron aims to silence Kasson-Mantorville
Century enters the contest with momentum, having won three consecutive games, including a stunning 25-20 upset of No. 1-seeded and No. 6-ranked Owatonna on the Huskies’ home turf last Saturday. The Panthers’ resilience is evident in their recent performance, with running back Max Elliott powering the offense for 118 yards in the regular-season loss. Statistically, the teams are closely matched in scoring efficiency; Northfield averages 25.0 points per game while allowing 17.0, whereas Century averages 23.4 points per game and concedes 19.4. Notably, three of Northfield’s five losses this season came by a touchdown or fewer, suggesting that a single defensive stop or offensive drive could decide the outcome of this tight affair.
In the other marquee matchup, No. 3 seed Kasson-Mantorville (7-3) faces No. 1 seed Byron (8-1) in a clash of consistency and dominance. Kasson-Mantorville has established itself as a perennial contender, appearing in the section championship game for the eighth consecutive year and the ninth time in the last decade, excluding the 2020 season when the state tournament was canceled. The KoMets have won three of their recent games, showcasing their ability to compete at the highest level of local football. With Byron holding the top seed and an 8-1 record, the game hinges on whether Kasson-Mantorville can leverage its deep postseason experience to overcome the Bulldogs’ superior overall resume and secure a spot in the state tournament.
