LIV Golf Wound Down as Backers Withdraw Support

LIV Golf is officially moving toward dissolution after its final potential investor, BC Partners Credit, withdrew support for the struggling tournament series. The decision comes after the league failed to secure the approximately $300m (£223m) in financing necessary to launch “LIV 2.0,” a restructured version of the competition. This withdrawal follows the earlier exit of Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) in April, which forced the organization to file for bankruptcy protection last month, effectively sealing the fate of the 2021-founded tour.

The $300m rescue plan collapses, ending the Saudi-backed league’s bid for a ‘LIV 2.0’ revival.

Despite internal optimism that the league could pivot with a new business model, the financial and logistical hurdles proved insurmountable. Sources indicate that while organizers had secured commitments from co-investors and garnered support from within the golf ecosystem, they could not finalize the critical agreements required to move forward. The timeline for restructuring became unmanageable, leading BC Partners to deem the deal non-viable. This marks the definitive end of the league’s attempt to sustain itself as a standalone entity after its initial high-profile launch.

The collapse of LIV 2.0 follows a significant exodus of top talent, with major winners and stars like Jon Rahm and Sergio Garcia already departing the tour. Although the latest iteration reportedly had around 30 players signed up, including other major champions, the lack of a sustainable financial foundation doomed the project. The wind-down process signals a major shift in the professional golf landscape, as the league that once promised to disrupt the sport with massive prize pools and shorter formats is now set to cease operations entirely.
