Leicestershire’s County Championship Division One status has been officially revoked after an appeals panel upheld the club’s 19-point deduction for pitch irregularities. The decision confirms the Foxes’ relegation to Division Two, ending their top-flight campaign despite their on-field performance. The penalty stems from a match referee’s assessment that the surface at Grace Road was rated “poor” during their August victory over Glamorgan, a finding the club has fought unsuccessfully to overturn.
Foxes lose appeal over ‘poor’ Grace Road surface, sealing drop to Division Two
The Foxes had argued that the substandard pitch conditions were the direct result of an unscheduled Bollywood film shoot taking place days prior to the fixture. While the original 27-point sanction was reduced to 19 points, Leicestershire appealed the remaining deduction, claiming they had acted reasonably given the external interference. However, the appeals panel rejected this defense, ruling that the club failed to take adequate measures to prepare the wicket to Championship standards, thereby upholding the initial finding of regulatory breach.
The upheld sanction has mathematically secured Leicestershire’s exit from the top tier, as they now finish 17 points behind third-bottom Essex in the final table. This outcome places the Midlanders alongside Hampshire, who were also relegated from Division One this season. The decision marks a significant administrative and sporting setback for the club, which will now begin preparations for a return to the second tier of the County Championship next season.
