Kim Cosenza set a singular goal for her debut season at Holy Cross: ensure her six seniors left the program with a memorable final chapter. That objective was realized on Oct. 25 when the Crusaders defeated American 2-1 in a shootout at Hart Turf Field, clinching a historic berth in the Patriot League playoffs. This victory marks the first time Holy Cross has qualified for the PL tournament since the COVID-shortened spring season of 2021, capping a season where the senior class fully embraced the new coaching philosophy.
First Patriot League playoff berth since 2021 secured by senior class under new coach.
The emotional weight of the achievement was palpable, with Cosenza describing the experience as “unreal.” The six seniors—Saskia Williams, Maguire Sturgis, Meredith Schepens, Charlotte Powers, Marissa MacLean, and Madison Clark—achieved a milestone that eluded them during their previous three years at the university. Cosenza noted that while navigating a coaching transition in a senior year is often challenging, this group “completely chosen to buy in,” allowing them to leave the program in a better state than they found it.
Cosenza, a Fitchburg native and former Worcester State standout, stepped into the Holy Cross role after a successful five-year tenure at WPI. Her ability to stabilize the team and guide them to postseason contention underscores her growing reputation in collegiate field hockey. With one regular-season game remaining and the upcoming Patriot League tournament, the Crusaders are poised to extend their resurgence, proving that Cosenza’s leadership has already made a lasting impact on the program’s trajectory.
