Conner Mantz admitted he was “speechless” following a disappointing 11th-place finish in Sunday’s New York City Marathon, clocking a time of 2:07:27. The result marked a significant dip in form for the two-time NCAA champion, who ended a streak of consistent top-eight finishes in major marathons that had held since the 2023 Boston Marathon. Mantz also lost his status as the top American finisher, as Zouhair Talbi, Ahmed Muhumed, and Ryan Ford placed sixth, seventh, and 10th, respectively, while Sweden’s Andreas Almgren claimed the overall victory in 2:06:01.
American record holder struggles to find rhythm after long injury layoff
The performance was particularly notable given Mantz’s recent trajectory. His New York run was his first marathon since October 12, 2025, when he shattered the American record with a 2:04:43 fourth-place finish in Chicago. Since that historic performance, the Smithfield native has been sidelined for a year due to two sacral stress fractures and related stress reactions in his pelvis. This extended absence from competition appears to have disrupted his competitive edge, as he failed to replicate the dominance he previously displayed on the road-racing circuit.
Reflecting on the race, Mantz expressed confusion over his performance, telling Let’s Run, “I don’t know what it was… It just seemed like my legs weren’t there today.” The uncertainty surrounding his physical condition highlights the challenges of returning to elite-level competition after a lengthy injury recovery. While the American record remains intact, Mantz now faces the task of rebuilding his form and confidence to reclaim his position as a leading figure in American distance running.
