The Houston Rockets suffered their second consecutive defeat, dropping a 102-95 decision to the Phoenix Suns at the Mortgage Matchup Center. Despite entering the contest with clear game plans to limit Phoenix’s scoring threats and elevate their pace, Houston failed to execute during the critical first 17 minutes. In that span, the Rockets allowed former teammate Jalen Green to convert his first four shot attempts and committed eight turnovers that directly led to 15 Suns points, while Houston recorded zero fast-break points.
Houston’s defensive breakdown and turnover plague doomed their second straight win.
The early defensive lapses created a compounding cycle of stagnation for Houston. Because turnovers forced the Rockets to take the ball out of the basket, they were restricted to operating in the halfcourt against a set Phoenix defense. This limitation resulted in long, stagnant late-clock possessions that frequently ended in further turnovers, preventing Houston from establishing rhythm. The team trailed by 18 points at various stages, a deficit that proved insurmountable as the game progressed.
Head coach Ime Udoka acknowledged the team’s lack of preparation in the opening minutes, citing the Suns’ physicality as a factor the Rockets failed to handle. “Anytime a team that’s struggling, you come out and let them be the aggressor, give them confidence and score a 35-point quarter … just make it a dogfight all game,” Udoka stated. The 7-3 Rockets must focus on improving their initial energy and ball security to avoid falling into similar traps in upcoming matchups.
