No. 4 Indiana’s offense continued its four-week slump on Saturday, prompting head coach Curt Cignetti to bench starting quarterback Josh Hoover in favor of seventh-year veteran Grant Wilson. Hoover was pulled from the game against Minnesota after taking a significant hit on an interception just before halftime, though Cignetti did not confirm whether the substitution was strictly injury-related or a tactical decision based on performance. The move signals a potential shift in the quarterback room as the Hoosiers seek to stabilize their air attack.
Cignetti turns to veteran Wilson after Hoover’s shaky performance against Minnesota
Hoover’s struggles are not new, following a right shoulder injury sustained against Ohio State two weeks ago. Since returning, he has appeared out of sync, spraying the ball around the field and frequently missing receivers high or wide. In the first half against Minnesota, Hoover completed just 8 of 19 passes for 119 yards while managing only two rushing yards on three carries. His lack of confidence was palpable, echoing his subpar outing at Michigan last week, where he also failed to connect with his targets consistently.
The decision to insert Wilson highlights the urgency within the program to find a reliable offensive engine. While Hoover’s status remains uncertain, the immediate reliance on Wilson suggests Cignetti is prioritizing stability over youth in a critical stretch of the season. As Indiana looks to rebound from this offensive drought, the performance of the veteran signal-caller will be crucial in determining whether the Hoosiers can regain their footing and maintain their top-five ranking.
