Maryland offers free tuition to student who stays for full Illinois game

The University of Maryland is deploying a high-stakes incentive to combat student fan fatigue, announcing that one lucky undergraduate will receive free tuition for the 2027 spring semester if they remain at SECU Stadium until the final whistle of Saturday’s matchup against Illinois. The prize, valued at $5,507 based on the in-state undergraduate rate, is part of a strategic effort to retain student attendance through the fourth quarter, a critical window for maximizing game-day revenue and atmosphere. While the primary target is the undergraduate population, graduate and out-of-state students remain eligible to enter the raffle, broadening the pool of potential participants.

Rachel Palmer, Maryland’s assistant athletic director for fan development and event marketing, confirmed that the initiative has been in development since August, receiving final school approval this week. Palmer emphasized the logistical challenges of maintaining student engagement during lengthy contests, noting that students face competing academic and social obligations. “It’s always hard to have students stay at entire games, and we want to encourage them as much as possible,” Palmer told The Baltimore Sun. “We know they have a million other things going on. Football games can be long, so what can we do to encourage them to stay?”

To execute the promotion, organizers will display a QR code on the stadium’s video board during halftime, allowing attendees to scan and enter the draw. From the total pool of entries, five finalists will be randomly selected and brought onto the field for an announcement during the third quarter. One winner will then be chosen from this group of five, creating a multi-stage suspense element designed to keep the crowd engaged throughout the latter half of the game. This creative marketing approach highlights the growing pressure on college athletic departments to innovate beyond traditional ticket sales to secure long-term fan loyalty.
