Francisco Lindor has been named the 2026 recipient of the Roberto Clemente Award, a distinction that honors the player who best represents baseball through sportsmanship, community involvement, and positive contributions on and off the field. The New York Mets shortstop was announced as the winner on Monday morning, joining an exclusive fraternity of recipients that includes legends like Carlos Delgado and Carlos Beltran. This award, given annually since 1971, stands as one of the most prestigious non-performance-based honors in Major League Baseball, recognizing character and humanitarian efforts above all else.
Lindor credits family values and humanitarian legacy behind his historic MLB honor
For Lindor, the award carries deep personal significance rooted in his upbringing in Puerto Rico, where the legacy of Roberto Clemente served as a foundational history lesson. Clemente, a native of Puerto Rico and one of the greatest players of his generation, was a staunch advocate for Latin American athletes and a dedicated humanitarian who used sports to help the less fortunate. Lindor stated that these lessons resonated throughout his youth, shaping his commitment to giving back and sharing his blessings, a philosophy instilled by his parents.
In his acceptance remarks, Lindor emphasized that the honor is not about individual glory but about the collective impact of his family and community. “To me, this honor, this award, it’s probably one of the most important awards in MLB, just because it’s not about myself,” Lindor said. “It’s about my family, my parents, how much they have instilled in me to give and share the blessings that I have had.” By joining this distinguished group, Lindor continues the tradition of using his platform to champion humanitarian causes, mirroring the path paved by Clemente decades ago.
