Lorenzo Musetti enters his upcoming match at the Paris Masters with a renewed sense of urgency, admitting he possesses “extra motivation” to defeat Alexander Zverev. The Italian will face the German in a high-stakes encounter that marks Zverev’s first competitive appearance since officially ascending to the world number one ranking. Musetti emphasized the deep familiarity between the two rivals, noting that their extensive history of practice sessions and competitive matches across various surfaces has created a unique dynamic where both players understand each other’s strengths intimately.
The Italian aims to end the German’s historic streak as he defends his new top ranking.
Zverev’s rise to the top of the ATP rankings is a historic milestone, making him the first German man to hold the number one spot since Boris Becker in 1995. The German secured this position on Monday after a dominant performance at the Vienna Open, which capped a stellar 2026 season that included his first two Grand Slam titles at Roland Garros and the US Open, alongside a Wimbledon final appearance. Despite this monumental achievement, Zverev faces a psychological hurdle in Musetti, who holds a 3-2 career head-to-head advantage and won three consecutive meetings against the German between 2024 and 2025.
The narrative of their rivalry shifts slightly with Zverev’s most recent victory at last season’s Vienna Open, which broke Musetti’s winning streak and set the stage for their sixth career encounter. As the Paris Masters unfolds, the focus turns to whether Musetti can leverage his current form to reclaim the upper hand or if Zverev’s new status as the world’s best will provide the edge needed to extend his dominance. This match serves as a critical test of Zverev’s momentum as he begins his tenure at the top of the sport.
