Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule has officially dismissed offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen, marking the second time in his career the former University of Houston head coach has been let go. The decision came Saturday, just 24 hours after the Cornhuskers suffered a 24-13 defeat to Illinois, which snapped their perfect 5-0 start and extended their losing streak to four games. Rhule acknowledged the severity of the situation in a statement, noting that while he takes ultimate responsibility for the program’s performance, the current offensive strategy and execution were “simply not working.”
Holgorsen’s second firing follows offensive collapse and 24-13 loss to Illinois
The statistical evidence of the offensive struggles was stark, as Nebraska managed only 54 total points across its last four defeats. The Huskers failed to score more than 17 points in any of those losses, highlighting a complete stall in production following a dominant start to the season. This offensive drought stands in sharp contrast to the team’s early momentum, forcing Rhule to act decisively to stabilize the unit before the remainder of the schedule.
Holgorsen’s departure is particularly poignant given his famous 2022 comment about not being in a “hot seat” during his tenure at Houston. Although Rhule praised Holgorsen as a “fantastic offensive mind” and a “strong leader,” the immediate need for a change in direction outweighed past contributions. The firing signals a major shake-up in Nebraska’s coaching staff as the program seeks to reverse its recent slide and regain competitive footing.
