Fennville Public Schools has officially appointed Derrick DeVries as the new Director of Athletics and Community Recreation, a strategic move to stabilize and elevate the district’s sports programs. DeVries steps into the role previously held by Tony Stennett, who recently stepped down from the position. This transition marks a significant shift in leadership for the district, prioritizing a candidate with deep roots in local collegiate athletics and proven administrative capability.
Calvin alum brings four years of coaching and operational expertise to replace Tony Stennett
DeVries arrives with a robust background in both coaching and athletic operations. As a former star basketball player at Calvin University, he recently served as the associate head coach and recruiting coordinator for the Knights for the past four years. The district highlighted his extensive experience in managing teams and athletes, logistical planning for camps and tournaments, and athlete development. His tenure as the director of youth and team camps further underscores his ability to handle large-scale athletic events and community engagement initiatives.
Beyond his professional credentials, DeVries brings a strong personal connection to the region’s athletic landscape. He currently resides in Hudsonville with his wife, Saydee (Johns), a former tennis star at Holland and Hope College. This local presence, combined with his collegiate pedigree, positions DeVries to bridge the gap between high school athletics and the broader community recreation sector. The appointment signals Fennville’s commitment to leveraging experienced local talent to drive future success in its athletic programs.
