No. 9 UCLA extended its undefeated 2026 season to 7-0 with a dominant 28-10 victory over Michigan State at the Rose Bowl. The Bruins showcased their depth by securing another statement win without starting quarterback Nico Iamaleava, proving their offensive system remains potent regardless of personnel changes. Despite the final score suggesting a blowout, head coach Bob Chesney acknowledged the game was far from perfect, particularly in the opening frames where the Spartans gained early momentum.
UCLA coach breaks down slow start and fourth-quarter clock management
Chesney was candid about the defensive struggles in the first half, noting that two critical fumbles allowed Michigan State to rack up over 100 yards in returns. “That first half was not our type of football, not really how we want to play the game,” Chesney stated, emphasizing that such turnovers are unacceptable for a team aiming for a national title. However, he quickly pivoted to praise his players’ resilience, stating, “I thought our guys, again, did a really good job” in correcting course and controlling the tempo as the game progressed.
In the closing stages, Chesney admitted the Bruins played it safe, opting to run down the clock rather than exploit open field opportunities in the late third and fourth quarters. He noted that while the defensive box was loaded, UCLA could have taken more shots on the outside. “But at the same point, you’re trying to run this clock out and get out of here with the win, ultimately,” Chesney explained. “But I thought we managed it well enough to” secure the victory, highlighting the team’s maturity in protecting a lead against a spirited Michigan State squad.
