Duncan Brune silenced the Akron crowd with a 91-yard touchdown run with 3:57 remaining, securing a 28-20 victory for Ohio over the Zips on Tuesday night. The decisive strike came after Akron mounted a fourth-quarter rally to take a 17-14 lead, but the Bobcats responded swiftly to extend their Mid-American Conference dominance. This win improves Ohio’s record to 7-2 overall and 5-0 in conference play, while Akron falls to 1-8 overall and 0-5 in the MAC.
Late-game surge caps off dominant defensive showing for Bobcats
Ohio’s offensive momentum shifted immediately following Akron’s late surge. After Jordan Gant scored on a 1-yard run and Cibastian Broughton connected with Marcel Williams for a two-point conversion, quarterback Nick Poulos struck back on the very next play. Poulos launched a 60-yard bomb to Dom Dorwart, putting the Bobcats back in front 21-17. Poulos finished the night 12-of-20 for 197 passing yards and a rushing score, while Dorwart hauled in four receptions for 108 yards.
The Bobcats’ defense laid the foundation for the win early in the game. DJ Walker intercepted Broughton with nine seconds left in the first quarter, returning the pick 45 yards for a touchdown to give Ohio a 7-3 lead. Although Akron’s Jordan Gant rushed for 112 yards and a score, and Broughton threw for 232 yards, the Zips could not sustain their pressure against Ohio’s resilient defense and efficient offense.
