Devine Warhorses junior Brody Lane has cemented his status as a top-tier Texas high school athlete after being voted Express-News Athlete of the Week. Lane’s performance against the Hondo Owls was a masterclass in versatility, as he impacted the game on both offense and defense during a decisive 59-7 victory. His ability to switch seamlessly between roles made him the most visible player on the field, leading to a clean sweep of weekly honors that included Defensive Player of the Week earlier in the week.
Junior two-way star dominates both sides of the ball in 59-7 rout of Hondo
On the offensive side, Lane was the primary target for the Devine attack, hauling in six receptions for 110 yards and three touchdowns. His production in the receiving game provided a crucial spark, while his defensive prowess was equally stifling. Lane secured an interception, forced and recovered a fumble, and recorded three solo tackles, showcasing a well-rounded skill set that few athletes possess at the junior level. This dual-threat performance allowed him to outvote four other finalists in the Athlete of the Week poll, highlighting his dominance over the competition.
Lane’s award joins a strong week for Texas high school athletes, with Brandeis quarterback Wynter Smith taking Offensive Player of the Week honors for his 209 rushing and 146 passing yards against Clark. Additionally, Boerne Geneva’s Shae McNew impressed with 233 rushing yards in a win over Houston St. Francis. However, Lane’s unique combination of elite receiving numbers and disruptive defensive plays set him apart, marking another significant milestone in his rising career at Devine.
