Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney publicly condemned the display of an airplane banner calling for the firing of Florida State head coach Mike Norvell, labeling the stunt “embarrassing” and “disrespectful” after the Tigers defeated the Seminoles 36-24 on Saturday. The banner, which read “FSU: Fire Novell – Peter Collins,” flew over Doak S. Campbell Stadium during the game, drawing immediate criticism from Swinney, who noted the sign failed to even correctly spell Norvell’s name while accurately identifying Peter Collins, the chair of the FSU Board of Trustees.

In his post-game press conference, Swinney expressed deep frustration with the optics of the protest, arguing that such actions do not serve the student-athletes involved. “That was embarrassing what I saw above the stadium. It was embarrassing. It was an embarrassment,” Swinney stated. “Florida State’s better than that. That’s not good for these kids.” He emphasized that while fan frustration is understandable given the program’s recent struggles, the manner in which the message was delivered crossed a line of professionalism and respect for the coaching staff.
Swinney further highlighted the lack of basic effort in the banner’s creation, pointing out the misspelling of Norvell’s surname as a sign of disrespect. “And they didn’t even spell his name right. Didn’t even have the freakin’ R in the name. That’s just disrespectful,” he said. The Clemson coach defended Norvell as a “good man,” asserting that one does not need to admire a coach’s tactical decisions to maintain basic human decency. The incident adds another layer of controversy to FSU’s season as the Seminoles continue to navigate fan dissatisfaction and program instability.
