The Chicago Cubs closed their 2024 season with a significant defensive distinction, officially claiming the National League Team Gold Glove award for the second consecutive year. This team-wide honor, announced by Talkin’ Baseball, stands as a bright spot following the franchise’s early elimination in the NL Wild Card series against the San Diego Padres. By securing this back-to-back title, the Cubs have cemented their status as one of the most reliable defensive units in the league, proving that their fielding prowess remains elite despite their postseason struggles.
Defensive excellence offsets early playoff exit as Chicago claims back-to-back team honors.
Individual accolades further highlighted the team’s defensive dominance, led by center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong and third baseman Alex Bregman. Crow-Armstrong captured his second straight Gold Glove, driven by a league-leading 26 Outs Above Average and 10 Defensive Runs Saved. His defensive metrics complemented a historic offensive campaign where he joined the 40/40 club, finishing with a .280 batting average, 45 home runs, 107 RBIs, and 41 stolen bases. Meanwhile, Bregman earned his first Gold Glove as a Cub, posting a .983 fielding percentage with 225 assists and just five errors across 72 putouts and 225 total chances.
Bregman’s achievement marks a historic milestone for the franchise, as he becomes the first third baseman to win the Gold Glove since legendary icon Ron Santo. This individual success underscores the depth of the Cubs’ infield defense, which has been a cornerstone of their recent competitive identity. As the team looks to rebuild momentum for the upcoming season, the combination of Crow-Armstrong’s all-around excellence and Bregman’s reliable glove provides a strong foundation for future success, ensuring the Cubs remain a formidable force in the National League both offensively and defensively.
