Celtic secured their first victory of the Europa League campaign with a thrilling 3-2 home win over Besiktas, snapping a five-game European losing streak that threatened to become a historic low for the club. The match began with a nightmare scenario when Junior Olaitan converted a penalty, a rebound off Sam Johnstone’s save, to give the Turkish visitors the lead. This goal initially looked like it would condemn Celtic to a fifth consecutive defeat in European competition, a first in the club’s history, before manager Martin O’Neill intervened with a tactical masterstroke.
Key Match Highlights & Tactical Analysis
The turning point arrived just after the 60th minute when O’Neill introduced Callum Osmand, Camilo Duran, and Colby Donovan, a trio that instantly transformed the game’s momentum. Osmand proved his impact immediate, equalizing with his very first touch on the ball, showcasing the energy and directness the team had lacked in the first half. His performance set the stage for Duran, who rounded the goalkeeper to put Celtic ahead, demonstrating the quality of the bench that ultimately dictated the result in favor of the Hoops.
Despite a late scare when substitute Orkun Kokcu fired a stunning 25-yard strike into the bottom corner to level the score with five minutes remaining, Celtic held firm to claim the crucial points. The victory not only ends the worrying European run but also highlights the effectiveness of O’Neill’s in-game management, proving that the squad possesses the depth to overcome early deficits. With the Europa League group stage still to come, this resilient performance provides a significant psychological boost and a foundation for future success.
