Baku has officially become the global hub for youth football as the inaugural FIFA U-15 World Cup & Festival™ kicked off with an unprecedented gathering of talent. More than 3,000 young athletes and officials from all 189 FIFA member associations have descended on Azerbaijan for a week-long celebration of the sport’s next generation. The tournament features approximately 1,000 matches leading up to the final showdown at Baku Crystal Hall on 30 October, marking a significant expansion of FIFA’s competitive calendar for junior age groups.
3,000 players and 78 debutants redefine global youth football development in Azerbaijan.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino emphasized the historic nature of the event during the opening ceremony, stating that the tournament “truly unites the world.” He highlighted that while football is often cited as a unifying force, this is the first instance where every corner of the planet is represented in a single venue. This logistical feat underscores FIFA’s strategic commitment to inclusivity, ensuring that even the smallest footballing nations have a platform to compete on the international stage alongside established powerhouses.
The most striking statistic of the event is that 78 participating associations are competing in a FIFA world tournament for the first time at any age level. For these smaller federations, the Festival serves as a critical debut and a cornerstone of a long-term development project. By integrating competition with educational and developmental initiatives, the event aims to extend football’s infrastructure to every corner of the globe, proving that the impact of this tournament extends far beyond match results and league standings.
