Australia has officially secured the services of Michael Hussey as a long-term batting consultant, a strategic move designed to stabilize the national team’s performance in the longest format of the game. The 51-year-old legend, widely known as ‘Mr Cricket,’ will integrate into the coaching staff to address recent inconsistencies, particularly following a 1-1 draw against Bangladesh and a 2-1 defeat in South Africa. This appointment signals a clear intent to rebuild the batting unit’s resilience before the high-stakes 2027 Ashes series, where Australia aims to reclaim dominance in the historic rivalry.
‘Mr Cricket’ joins national staff to overhaul Test form ahead of 2027 series and LA Olympics.
Hussey’s tenure begins immediately with the five-game T20 series against England starting November 21, where he will also play a pivotal role in preparing the squad for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. This marks the return of cricket to the Olympic stage after a 128-year absence, alongside the 2028 T20 World Cup hosted by Australia and New Zealand. By leveraging his extensive experience, Hussey aims to bridge the gap between short-format intensity and the technical depth required for Test cricket, ensuring the squad is versatile and mentally prepared for multi-format cycles.
With 302 international caps under his belt, Hussey brings an unparalleled understanding of the Australian cricketing psyche and technical fundamentals. His transition from a recurring short-term advisor to a permanent fixture on the national staff reflects the administration’s confidence in his ability to mentor the next generation of batters. As Australia looks to reverse its recent form, Hussey’s guidance is expected to be instrumental in crafting a more cohesive and competitive lineup for the upcoming decade of global tournaments.
