Argentina to appeal to CAS after FIFA rejects Paredes ban

Luciana Rodrigues

The Argentine Football Association (AFA) has confirmed it will petition the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) following FIFA’s decision to uphold disciplinary sanctions against the national team and midfielder Leandro Paredes. The legal challenge stems from on-field incidents during Argentina’s 1-0 defeat by Spain in the 2026 World Cup final, where Paredes, Nahuel Molina, and Thiago Almada were involved in a physical altercation. While FIFA reduced Molina’s initial seven-match ban to four games, the 10-match suspension for Paredes remains in full effect, prompting the AFA to seek higher-level arbitration to overturn the rulings.

AFA challenges sanctions over World Cup final fracas and Falklands banner

Beyond individual player bans, the AFA faces a substantial $321,000 (£235,000) fine for violating FIFA’s disciplinary code. The infraction cites team misconduct, discriminatory chants by supporters, and the use of the sporting event for non-sporting demonstrations. This latter charge specifically references the semi-final victory over England, where several Argentine players displayed a banner asserting sovereignty over the Falkland Islands. Both Paredes and Molina have also been individually fined $90,000 (£66,000) for their roles in the final’s post-match chaos, compounding the financial and reputational damage to the squad.

This escalation marks a significant legal battle for South American football, as the AFA attempts to mitigate the long-term impact of these suspensions on its squad depth. The CAS hearing will determine whether the original sanctions were proportionate to the offenses committed, with the outcome potentially setting a precedent for political statements made on the global stage. As the arbitration process begins, attention turns to whether the court will uphold FIFA’s strict stance on non-sporting demonstrations or offer relief to the players and association.
