Cincinnati’s Favorite Mascot Crowned: Bearcat Wins Reader Vote

Luciana Rodrigues

The University of Cincinnati Bearcat has officially claimed the title of Cincinnati’s favorite sports mascot after sweeping a reader-driven poll with a commanding lead. In a contest that highlighted the deep-rooted passion for local athletics, the Bearcat secured 466 votes out of 1,035 total ballots, capturing 45.1% of the share. This landslide victory underscores the enduring popularity of the Big East program and its spirited representation in the city’s sports landscape.

UC’s iconic mascot dominates local sports fandom, leaving Xavier and Reds mascots in the dust.

The competition was fierce, particularly from the city’s other major collegiate rival, Xavier University. The Blue Blob finished in second place with 14% of the vote, while Xavier’s secondary mascot, D’Artagnan, rounded out the top three with 8.6%. The results reflect the intense nature of the UC-Xavier rivalry, which extends well beyond the field and into the cultural identity of the region. Fans clearly favored the singular, recognizable image of the Bearcat over the dual-mascot approach employed by the Musketeers.

Rounding out the upper echelon of the rankings were the Cincinnati Reds, whose trio of mascots occupied positions four through six. Mr. Redlegs emerged as the preferred baseball mascot with 6% of the votes, narrowly edging out Mr. Red at 3.7% and Rosie Red at 3.3%. While the Reds’ characters failed to dethrone the Bearcat, their collective presence in the top six demonstrates the significant following the Major League franchise maintains within the community.
