AC Milan and Inter Milan have officially launched the detailed design phase for their new shared home, Generali Stadium, marking a decisive move away from the historic San Siro. The clubs presented the initial architectural concepts on October 29, signaling the start of a major transformation in the city’s sporting infrastructure. This joint venture, backed by insurance and asset management giant Generali, is not merely a stadium project but a cornerstone of a broader urban redevelopment initiative aimed at revitalizing the surrounding district.
Foster + Partners designs a shared home that redefines Milan’s urban sporting identity
The proposed venue will accommodate approximately 71,500 spectators, offering a modern alternative to the aging Meazza. The architectural vision, led by Foster + Partners, seeks to blend contemporary functionality with deep-rooted local heritage. Designers have explicitly drawn inspiration from Milan’s iconic landmarks, including the Duomo di Milano, ensuring the structure reflects the city’s distinct identity. This approach aims to create a facility that is both a world-class football arena and a permanent fixture in the urban landscape.
Angus Campbell, senior partner at Foster + Partners, emphasized the stadium’s role in maintaining a vibrant connection with the city. “Serving both AC Milan and FC Internazionale Milano, the stadium occupies a unique position in global football, forming a continually active and vibrant part of Milano’s urban fabric,” Campbell stated. The design prioritizes fan experience and atmosphere while significantly enhancing accessibility and circulation, setting a new benchmark for shared stadium operations in European football.
