Sebastian Valdez’s path to the NFL defies the traditional scouting model, beginning with a journey from Spring Valley, California, to Bozeman, Montana, in 2021. Arriving at Montana State as a zero-star recruit, Valdez faced a daunting transition under a new coaching staff that had not recruited him. However, first-year defensive line coach Shawn Howe immediately identified the 18-year-old’s potential, noting his raw athleticism and framing him as the future of the program’s 3-technique role despite his scrawny frame.
How an unheralded Spring Valley native transformed into a force at the line of scrimmage.
Circumstance accelerated Valdez’s development when a starting defensive tackle suffered a knee injury during the first week of the season. Howe moved Valdez to the interior line, a decision that proved pivotal in his career trajectory. This early exposure to high-pressure snaps allowed Valdez to refine his technique and physicality, laying the groundwork for his eventual rise through the ranks. His ability to adapt to new positions and coaches demonstrated a resilience that scouts often overlook in lower-tier recruits.
Now a key component of the San Francisco 49ers’ defensive front, Valdez has earned the nickname “Hulk” for his ability to manhandle NFL linemen. His journey from an unranked high school prospect to a starting NFL player highlights the value of developmental coaching and player adaptability. As he continues to dominate at the line of scrimmage, Valdez serves as a testament to the fact that star ratings do not dictate professional success, particularly when raw talent meets the right guidance.
