Woodland’s girls volleyball team secured its seventh Naugatuck Valley League championship on Thursday night, dismantling Naugatuck 3-0 at Kennedy High School. The Hawks, who entered the tournament as defending champions, controlled the match from the opening serve, winning the sets 25-12, 25-18, and 25-19. This victory marks the third straight tournament opponent to be shut out by Woodland, highlighting the team’s relentless dominance in the postseason.

Key Match Highlights & Tactical Analysis

The result contrasts sharply with the regular season, where Naugatuck was the only NVL team to extend Woodland to five sets in both matchups. Despite that earlier resistance, the Greyhounds were unable to match the Hawks’ intensity in the final. Naugatuck coach Kevin Wesche acknowledged the disparity, praising Woodland’s setter for distributing the ball effectively from all angles. “They kept attacking from all different angles, front and back, middle, left and right,” Wesche noted. “We tried our best, but we couldn’t stop them.”

Sophomore outside hitter Lilly DeGennaro was named the tournament’s outstanding player, anchoring the Woodland offense with 13 kills and nine digs. Her performance was pivotal in maintaining the Hawks’ high level of play throughout the sweep. With this win, Woodland has claimed the NVL title in three of the last five seasons, having also captured the championship in 2022 and 2023. The victory cements the Hawks’ status as the premier program in the league, showcasing a depth and consistency that few opponents can counter.
