Jon Rahm silenced any concerns about rust with a commanding performance in his first competitive round since the birth of his fourth child. The 31-year-old Spaniard posted a bogey-free, 7-under 65 during the opening round of the Abu Dhabi Aldar Championship at Yas Links. Despite acknowledging limited preparation due to the new arrival and overseeding issues at his Arizona home course, Rahm displayed sharp focus and technical precision from the first tee.
The Spaniard carded a bogey-free 65 at Yas Links, showing zero rust despite limited prep.
Rahm’s round was defined by aggressive play on the course’s longer holes, where he gained three strokes across the four par-5s. A standout moment came on the par-5 second hole, where a tremendous 5-iron approach from the fairway set up an early birdie. He maintained that momentum with five birdies on the front nine and finished strong with consecutive birdies on the final two holes, showcasing the confidence he gained from “beautiful swings” early in the round.
As the first of two DP World Tour playoff events, the tournament features a deep field, with Francesco Laporta currently holding the lead at 10 under. However, Rahm sits in a tie for second, just three strokes back, alongside a contingent of other top contenders. His ability to manage expectations and take the round “one shot at a time” has positioned him as a serious threat heading into Friday’s second round.
