Haas has officially confirmed that Esteban Ocon will not return to the grid for the remainder of the 2024 Formula 1 season. The team announced that Formula 2 championship leader Rafael Camara will assume Ocon’s seat for this weekend’s Sao Paulo Grand Prix, marking the Brazilian’s earlier-than-expected Formula 1 debut. Camara, who was previously scheduled to join the squad for the 2027 campaign, will now partner Ollie Bearman, providing Haas with a fresh dynamic for the final stretch of the season.
F2 leader Rafael Camara steps up to partner Bearman after Mexico fallout
The decision follows a reported falling out between Ocon and the team during last weekend’s Mexico City Grand Prix. After the incident, Haas replaced Ocon with Ryo Hirakawa for the remainder of the race, where the Japanese driver finished 10th. However, Hirakawa is unavailable for the Sao Paulo event as he is currently competing in the World Endurance Championship in Italy, necessitating the immediate call-up of Camara to fill the vacant seat.
This strategic shift underscores Haas’s commitment to its long-term driver development pathway while addressing immediate team dynamics. By promoting Camara, the team not only secures a competitive driver for the upcoming Brazilian round but also accelerates the integration of its future star into the F1 environment. The move effectively ends Ocon’s tenure with Haas for the current year, leaving the team to focus on maximizing points with Bearman and Camara in the closing rounds of the championship.
