Mikayla Blakes has firmly closed the door on speculation regarding her future, declaring that her journey at Vanderbilt is far from over. As the Commodores prepare for her junior season, the superstar guard has explicitly stated that the transfer portal was “never even considered,” signaling a level of loyalty that is increasingly rare in modern college athletics. The decision to stay also dispels any lingering questions about an early exit to the WNBA, a path Blakes admits she is not yet prepared to navigate. “I have no clue,” Blakes said candidly regarding the professional league’s mechanics. “I don’t even know how it works (with the WNBA), to be completely honest.” This transparency underscores her primary focus: completing her collegiate career and maximizing her development within the SEC. By prioritizing her four-year plan, Blakes ensures that Vanderbilt retains its most impactful player for at least two more seasons, a significant advantage in a conference known for its competitive depth.
For the Vanderbilt women’s basketball program, this announcement is a strategic victory that extends beyond the immediate season. With two seasons already completed and two remaining, Blakes’ presence allows the staff to build a long-term culture of excellence rather than chasing short-term wins. Her willingness to stay, potentially even for a fifth year, offers a rare window for continuity in an era defined by player movement. As the Commodores look to translate their talent into postseason success, Blakes’ unwavering dedication serves as the foundation for what could be the most dominant era in program history.
