Michigan State football’s injury crisis has deepened significantly as starting quarterback Alessio Milivojevic is confirmed out for Saturday’s matchup against No. 10 UCLA. According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, the Spartans will not disclose the specific nature of Milivojevic’s injury, but his absence marks a critical blow to an offense already struggling to find consistency. This development forces the coaching staff to rely on a young and inexperienced signal-caller at a pivotal moment in the Big Ten season, raising serious questions about the team’s offensive viability against a top-10 defense.
Spartans face a quarterbacking crisis as injury woes deepen ahead of clash with No. 10 Bruins
With both Milivojevic and backup quarterback Cam Fancher sidelined, first-year freshman Kayd Coffman is set to make his first career start. Coffman, who has served as the No. 2 quarterback in losses to Illinois and Northwestern, is thrust into the spotlight after receiving his initial college snaps late in the loss at Wisconsin following Fancher’s apparent knee injury. The transition to a true freshman starter places immense pressure on Coffman to manage the game and execute the playbook under the intensity of a primetime Rose Bowl setting, a stark contrast to the limited action he has previously experienced.
The Spartans’ roster depletion extends beyond the quarterback position, with linebacker and captain Jordan Hall missing his fourth game of the season. Additionally, cornerbacks Tre Bell, Tyran Chappell, and Charles Brantley, along with wide receiver Charles Taplin, are also listed as out, further thinning an already compromised defense and secondary. These absences create a daunting challenge for Michigan State as they prepare to face the Bruins, with kickoff scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET on CBS at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California.
