The Cleveland Guardians are poised to seize a commanding 3-1 lead in the American League Championship Series when they host the Tampa Bay Rays in Game 4 on Friday night at Progressive Field. Following a decisive 3-2 victory in Game 3, where Petey Halpin’s go-ahead two-run home run in the fifth inning proved pivotal, Cleveland now holds the momentum. The Guardians’ pitching staff has been dominant, with Gavin Williams striking out nine batters over five innings in the previous outing. A win tonight would put the top-seeded Rays on the brink of elimination, forcing them to win the remaining two games in their own ballpark to stay alive.
Cleveland aims for a 3-1 lead as Nick Martinez faces a bullpen-heavy Guardians attack.
Tampa Bay’s hopes rest heavily on veteran right-hander Nick Martinez, who enters the game with a 15-6 record and a 3.10 ERA from the regular season. Martinez has been particularly effective against Cleveland this year, delivering 13 scoreless innings across two starts. However, the Guardians are expected to counter with a bullpen-heavy approach, likely deploying closer Shawn Armstrong early to neutralize the Rays’ lineup. This strategic shift highlights Cleveland’s confidence in their relief corps, which has been a cornerstone of their postseason success thus far.

The series dynamics have shifted significantly since Game 1, with Cleveland’s aggressive offensive play and elite pitching depth giving them a distinct advantage. As the clock ticks toward the World Series, the pressure is now on Tampa Bay to respond, but the Guardians’ home-field advantage and current form suggest they are well-positioned to close out the series in four games.
