Georgia football suffered a stunning collapse on Saturday, falling 27-24 to unranked Auburn in a matchup that had the Bulldogs as clear top-ranked favorites. The game swung decisively on turnovers, with quarterback Gunner Stockton throwing two interceptions and committing a critical fumble in the fourth quarter. That final turnover allowed Auburn to secure the game-winning field goal, ending Georgia’s perfect season and capping a brutal week for the SEC powerhouse.
Despite costly turnovers, Bulldogs QB kept his head up in locker room
The loss marked a sharp contrast to Georgia’s dominant road victory over Alabama just seven days prior, highlighting the volatility of the college football landscape. While Auburn displayed notable flaws throughout the season, their execution in Athens was precise, particularly in capitalizing on Georgia’s mistakes. The defensive pressure forced Stockton into hurried throws, resulting in the pair of picks that kept Auburn within striking distance during the second half.
In the aftermath, head coach Kirby Smart offered a supportive assessment of his signal-caller’s mindset. Speaking to ESPN’s Mark Schlabach, Smart noted that Stockton’s “head was up” in the locker room despite the painful outcome. “We wouldn’t have been in the position we were in if it wasn’t for Gunner,” Smart said, emphasizing the quarterback’s overall contribution to the team’s success this season. Smart’s public defense of Stockton signals a focus on resilience and moving forward rather than dwelling on the individual errors that cost the Bulldogs the rivalry game.
