Notre Dame has secured a pivotal piece of its 2028 recruiting class by landing four-star running back Zaiden Jernigan from Louisville, Mississippi. The highly touted prospect, ranked in the Top 100 nationally, officially committed to head coach Marcus Freeman and the Fighting Irish, choosing them over strong contenders including Ole Miss, Indiana, UCLA, and Florida. Jernigan, who held more than 40 offers throughout his recruitment, cited the program’s consistent communication and championship pedigree as decisive factors in his final decision.

The commitment marks a significant milestone for Jernigan, who first visited South Bend in October 2025 during a matchup against USC. That visit proved transformative, as Notre Dame extended an offer that immediately elevated the school to the top of his board. “When I was up there, it just felt like home instantly,” Jernigan told Rivals, emphasizing that the relationship built with the coaching staff made the choice clear. He noted that the staff’s dedication to keeping him informed and prioritizing his development was instrumental in his decision-making process.
Running backs coach Ja’Juan Seider played a central role in sealing the deal, fostering a deep personal connection with Jernigan that extended well beyond the gridiron. The two developed a “father-son-like bond,” regularly discussing both football strategy and life lessons. This multifaceted relationship ensured Jernigan felt supported and valued, solidifying Notre Dame as his first choice. With this commitment, the Fighting Irish strengthen their depth at running back for the 2028 cycle, signaling continued investment in high-caliber talent.
